Abstract
Identical twins have identical genes. However, as they grow older they can develop differences in personality, appearance and health. For example, one twin may develop cancer or schizophrenia, while the other does not. This is clear evidence that environmental factors contribute to making us who we are. Professor Esteller’s work with twins has shown that this involves chemical tags that form a second layer of gene regulation, the epigenome. Because such tags can be manipulated, they represent a new way to target disease. Esteller’s current research is focused on developing new drugs to remove the adverse epigenetic tags that cause cancer.
