Abstract
Guidelines provides a framework for articulating the significance of project authorship and “design intent” in the process of developing strategies for preserving the Modernist architectural heritage in Victoria, British Columbia (1935-1975). It outlines an aesthetic historical context, presents a summary of the unique design vocabulary of regional Modernism, and provides a series of case studies that illustrate how the intentions of designers and builders can be respected and preserved within differing building types.

Guidelines resulted as a practical application of research undertaken for two exhibitions supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and hosted by the UVic Legacy Art Galleries: Survival by Design: The Legacy of Early Modern architecture in Victoria in the Urban Landscape, April 19 to July 8, 2017, and Survival by Design: The Legacy of Early Modern architecture in Victoria, the UVic Gordon Head Campus May 6 to Oct 8, 2017(curated by the author with contemporary photographs by John Taylor and documents from the Pacific North West Architectural Archive, University of Victoria Libraries Special Collections). This book was commissioned and funded by four Capital Region heritage agencies: The Victoria Civic Heritage Trust, the Victoria Heritage Foundation, the Saanich Heritage Foundation and the Oak Bay Heritage Foundation.
