Abstract

Many of the schools in the Vancouver area provide education to students whose parents are new immigrants, refugees or working parents from middle to low income families. At times, it is hard to involve and inform parents about what is happening in the schools of their children. Language barriers, lack of time, or little experience with Canadian schools can result in low parental involvement, and low level of communication between teachers and parents. There needs to be a bridge to connect this gap in communication. Through a classroom blog, I hope to be able to explore the benefits of using this tool to enhance communication between parents and the classroom. In doing so, it may better equip parents within these communities to support their child in their learning, to become more involved in their school lives, and to feel like they are partners in the learning community of their child’s classroom.
