Abstract

Anatomical variability in the scapula is inherently present; it can influence biomechanics and clinical decision-making. Characterizing variation in bone morphology and material properties in the population can support treatment and specifically the design, via shape and sizing, of shoulder implants. The Statistical Intensity Model (SIM) is a powerful tool to represent the average bone density distribution and main modes of variation of density distribution within the desired population shape. Accordingly, the purpose of this project is to generate a workflow in the development of Finite Element (FE) models from an SIM. The software utilized includes Python, 3D Slicer, and multiple data processing and analysis libraries. The development of the workflow was successful in generating a virtual model with associated material properties from the SIM. Future work required includes validation testing and providing improvements to the procedure.
