dc.description.abstract Professor Joshua A. Fogel, Canada Research Chair at York University, is a historian of modern China and Japan whose scholarly expertise ranges from the history of ideas to Sino-Japanese relation. In this lecture, he will examine the opening of the Chinese public sphere beyond the Marxist mainstream following the ascent of Deng Xiaoping in 1978. His talk will map the different realms of thought among figures articulating political points of view in contemporary China. en_US
