Abstract

This research seeks to investigate the intersectional dynamics of food security initiatives in and beyond Victoria, British Columbia with a particular look at how gender shapes food security in theoretical and material ways. My research also investigates projects which are underway on Vancouver Island to strengthen food security by building foodways beyond commodification, creating a positive multiplicity of economic and social relationships. These projects both strengthen food security and disrupt gender hierarchies by reorienting relationships of power away from commodified, masculine, state-controlled food production.
