Abstract

The purpose of this project was to investigate existing teaching processes and strategies in order to develop a composition unit for Grade 6 band that encouraged self-expression, independence, and musical understanding. The desired result was to enhance and enrich student experiences in an existing performance-based program. A review of the literature on composition investigated themes relating to process, strategies, and techniques and provided the framework for the development of the curriculum document. A 9-lesson unit on teaching introductory composition was created. The unit and lesson plans were crafted using the Backwards by Design model by Wiggins and McTighe (2005) and The British Columbia Ministry of Education Curriculum, Grade 6: Music K to 7 (2010).
