Given the fragmented nature of the AEC/FM domain, information sharing and management have been major problem areas for decades. Information exchange can generally be described invterms of individual information transactions. Several efforts are underway to standardize the content of data exchange transactions without attempting to standardize the transactions themselves. Standardization of the transactions will potentially provide better communication, increased quality and productivity, and reduced costs, delays and legal suits in the industry.enArticleDepartment of Civil Engineering
