This project investigated the geographic distribution of four species of Fawn-lilies (Erythronium grandiflorum, E. montanum, E. oregonum, and E. revolutum) in Western North America. The mapping software, QGIS, was used to generate distribution maps using data provided by the UVic Herbarium and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The purpose was to visualize each species' elevation range and habitat type. Ongoing work includes measuring leaf and flower traits from herbarium specimens to analyze morphological differences between the four species, plus two additional species (E. elegans and E. quinaultense). The next step will be to combine this with climate data in order to investigate linkages between climate and species traits and distributions. This research may provide insight into how fawn-lilies and other flowering alpine plants will respond to climate change.
