Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a curriculum for the sight singing and reading phase of a music programme designed for children aged ten to thirteen years with little or no previous music training. The materials developed in this paper constitute the vocal component of one year's music curriculum at the intermediate level, and based on the teaching/learning order for "Older Beginning Students" proposed in The Kodaly Context (Choksy, 1981, p.61). The first three chapters discuss the evolution of the "Kodaly Method," and present a critical view of "Kodaly" based programmes from music education and general curriculum perspectives. The curriculum is developed in the fourth chapter, and the Appendices contain songs to be used in carrying out the programme. The songs are, for the most part, North American, and about half of the North American songs are Canadian. Indices cross-referencing the songs and their sources are included.
