Abstract

What types of changes occurred in musical traditions around the Mediterranean during the shift from Late Antiquity to the European Middle Ages (which corresponds to the 'Golden Age' of Arabo-Islamic civilization)? And what changes later occurred during the shift from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance in Europe (which corresponds to the shift from the Baghdad-centered rule of the Abbasid dynasty to a period of multiple cosmopolitan centers)? What types of contacts and interactions did Mediterranean musical traditions experience during the 9th to 15th centuries? This presentation examines three aspects of musical life in the medieval Mediterranean: (1) the diffusion of musical instruments; (2) the basic concepts found in treatises on music theory; and (3) shared performance practices around the Mediterranean basin.
