Abstract
The design, construction, and operation of a photoelectric radial velocity spectrometer, based on the principles of an instrument described by R.F. Griffin (1967) is presented. Preliminary results of fourteen stars, observed at the 48-inch telescope of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, demonstrate that the instrument is useful to at least 8th magnitude over the spectral range go to M3 with a standard deviation of 2.8 km./sec. from the velocities of the General Catalogue of Stellar Radial Velocities of Wilson (1953).
Suggestions are given for further modifications to increase the accuracy and sensitivity of the spectrometer.
