My JCURA research introduces the notion of “off-target oppression”. Off-target oppression can be thought of as the flipside of passing, when one is misperceived as a member of an oppressed group and thus is treated like a member of an oppressed group. Through my research, I have developed a preliminary analysis of what off-target oppression is and created a basic model that explains how off-target oppression occurs. The goal of this project is to come to a better understanding off-target oppression, and the relationship between oppression and perception in general. My hope is that this better understanding of the mechanics of oppression will help us combat oppression better.en_US
