| dc.description.abstract | This paper is a hermeneutic exploration of language as an indicator of the relation of self to o(O)ther, particularly in and through poetry. It is written in a non-standard form as a demonstration of the play/interplay that is being explored in order to open the question regarding the exclusion of the topic of spirituality from contemporary educational discourse. The following questions are explored: How is it possible to approach that which is beyond or outside of our already decided understandings? How does language and word create the possibility of pointing or indicating that which cannot be said, that which cannot be certain? How are we to include the uncertain and unknown, the beyond-the-self in education? Combining the theories of Lev Vygotsky (1991 ed.) and Walker Percy (1983) regarding the formation of language, thought and the self, the paper explores these questions, arguing that it is the turn towards other that is a critical element in re-orienting understanding and education to mystery and to the excluded [and excluded other]. The paper also explores elements of the relationship between orality and literacy, drawing on the insights of Walter Ong (1991) to further explore the relationship of self to language to other. It calls for a dialogue that is not about conclusions and certainty but rather about openness and uncertainty. Is there a way, in academic and educational work, to include that which cannot be concluded and certified? The paper is an act of writing that attempts this enterprise. | en |
