There has been a lack of awareness on the importance of play among parents and teachers, especially on the importance of pretend play. Pretend play has its unique roles and benefits in one’s cognitive development. The relationship between pretend play and three cognitive abilities, problem-solving, self-regulation and creativity, are explored in this paper. Using the knowledge found in this research, some suggestions are provided to improve the teaching practice and curriculum of Chinese parents and teachers.en_US
