| dc.description.abstract | This thesis examines how multimedia transmissions over GPRS networks might be accomplished using the H.323 standard to provide signaling. GPRS is a packet based standard that can act as mobile access to the Internet due to efficient handling of bursty traffic. But for multimedia traffic which is not bursty in nature, particularly video, issues relating to signaling gain importance. H.323 is intended to provide for multimedia conferĀences on any packet switched network. We start with a discussion of GPRS, its architecture, operations, protocol layers, and features for QoS. Then we discuss H.323 in similar terms and begin considering enabling GPRS with H.323 signaling. We do this in terms of components of the H.323 architecture, considering where each might best fit within the GPRS network. We then make our conĀtribution by establishing the feasibility of such integration by describing the signaling flow for call setup and teardown. We then provide a brief comparison ofH.323 and SIP. SIP is an alternative to H.323 and performs many of the same functions . We then make another contribution by describing the signal flow for an SIP enabled GPRS network to establish feasibility. Then an examination of studies on GPRS follows. These studies are chosen to illustrate how GPRS may function with other protocols and under specific traffic types, such as audio. | |
