The muonium atom, µ+ e- , is an ideal system from which to gain information about thee - µ interaction both to test the existing theory of QED and to search for physics beyond the standard model. A systematic study has been carried out of the production and properties of thermal muonium from a fine silica powder, Cab-O-Sil. Properties such as the angular distribution are examined, as well as the experimental conditions resulting in the optimum production rate. The particular features of Cab-O-Sil which give it its muonium producing capability are investigated by considering other forms of silica. All of these investigations are carried out in the context of a Fick's Law diffusion model the validity of which is examined finally.
