Abstract
Memory Modification Technologies (MMTs) are powerful tools that can edit, enhance, or emotionally blunt memories. Memories, however, are a crucial constituent of the self: they are the foundation upon which we build our self-conceptions and life stories. If we opt to alter or destroy those memories, our identities might be irreparably disrupted. Particularly, individual authenticity and autonomy can be largely impacted by MMT use. This project explores the extent to which MMTs impact personal identity, and I examine how this ought to affect the development of bioethical constraints for these technologies.
