This study examines the dynamics of exiting a marginal occupational role by focusing on the experiences of former sex workers leaving the sex trade. Specifically, this thesis attempts to understand what personal characteristics, family background, work and contextual and health factors are most influential in terms of explaining why and how some individuals are able to make the transition out of the sex trade, where others are unable to do so. In doing so, this research also attempts to identify the major advantages and challenges that these individuals face both in attempting to leave and after finally exiting the sex trade. This research used a combined design, employing both a questionnaire format and qualitative interview to gather and analyze data on a sample of fifty-four (N=54) exited sex workers in the Capital Regional District (CRD) of British Columbia. Drawing from a recently-completed study of sex workers in the region (Benoit and Millar, 2001), a sample of currently working respondents (N=147) were utilized as a comparison group (total N=201). Findings from this study suggest that across some personal, family background, work and health factors there were notable differences between the situations of those currently working and those that had left the sex trade. However, the large number of similarities between the two groups suggests the difficulty associated with exiting the sex trade and the challenges former workers face afterwards. Future research should consider the course of exiting from the sex trade as an open-ended two-way process that may not necessarily have a terminal endpoint.
