This study explores the experience of solitude. The research methodology is phenomenology, which focuses on the meaning and experience of a phenomenon in a very personal sense and is discovery oriented. The author interviewed people that live in a remote community; people that have careers that necessitate that they work alone; and people in an educational organization that include "solo" experiences in its curriculum. The author combines the descriptions that she obtained from the interviews with her own lived experiences and with photographs as well as with related literature in order to provide a deeper understanding and awareness of solitude and its importance in people's lives.en
