dc.description.abstract | This thesis examines the long-standing colonial relationship between Russia and the Northern Caucasus, more specifically in Chechnya. Arching back to Imperial Russia, this thesis seeks to connect the Russo-Chechen conflicts marking the end of the Soviet period and the inauguration of the new Russian Federation with a long standing legacy of colonial violence. In parallel, this thesis discusses the changing role of Islam in the Chechen anti-colonial struggle and in the current arrangement between the Kremlin and Ramzan Kadyrov, who now ruthlessly protects Russia’s interests in Chechnya. | en_US |
