Abstract
The effective measurement of chronic pain has become a focus of recent pain research. While studies have demonstrated that the pain experience modified by many factors, assessing pain in the context of these factors is rarely undertaken. Thirty-six subjects volunteered to participate in the study, 18 persons with a chronic pain condition and 18 pain-free controls. Subjects completed a number of self-report questionnaires and were rated for their frequency of demonstrated pain behaviors. The results indicate that many subscales from the questionnaires, as well as several of the pain behaviors, are predictive of group membership. It is felt that the assessment methods utilized in this study hold promise as a diagnostic protocol for chronic pain.
