Abstract
The BC Public Service Pre-Retirement Program was evaluated in order to determine if participation in the program initiated retirement planning activities on the part of the individuals involved. The subjects of the study were Public Service employees who were planning to retire in two to three years. The non-equivalent Control Group Pre-test-Posttest design was used for this study. An experimental and comparison group, consisting of 30 members each, were given a pre-test one month prior to the program attended by the experimental group, and a posttest six weeks after the completion of the program. Overall, the results indicated that the experimental group showed a greater average increase in pre-retirement planning activities as compared to the comparison group. In particular, participation in the pre-retirement program made a difference i n affecting short-term behavioral change, primarily in the areas of retirement investments and retirement income. The major limitations of this study were the nonrandom samples and the small sample size. Suggestions for improvement to the pre-retirement program focused mainly on the size of the group, physical layout of the seminar room, methods used and use of facilities.
