The forgotten genocide: Reconciling Germany’s colonial past in Namibia

Abstract
The 20th century’s first genocide is a forgotten genocide. Between 1904 and 1908 German soldiers murdered more than 80% of the OvaHerero population and 50% of the Nama population in present-day Namibia. While Holocaust education has thrived, the Namibian genocide lacks justice. This research project examines how contemporary Namibian authors are reconciling with their country's German colonial history, and explores how literature has been used as a form of resistance and self-expression. This project also highlights emerging initiatives in Germany, such as the changing of street names and a decolonial audio walking tour.
