My research involves cucurbit[n]urils with the objective of distinguishing between CB[6] and CB[7] using fluorescence spectroscopy, and finding the minimum concentration of CB[6] that can be detected in the presence of CB[7]. The objectives also include finding out if the total concentration of CB affects the fluorescence detected using a fluorimeter. When IMA was encapsulated by CB[6] the host-guest complex emitted fluorescence, but this did not occur when CB[7] encapsulated 4-(1H-Imidazol-1-yl)aniline (IMA), as the complex emitted no fluorescence. As 1,6-hexanediamine dihydrochloride (DAH) was added to the CB[6] host-guest complex, IMA was displaced from the complex and fluorescence decreased from the maximum. Overall, through these experiments, CB[6] was found to interfere with the detection of CB[7], but CB[7] does not interfere with the detection of CB[6] because it either forms a non-emissive complex or forms an unstable complex with a low equilibrium constant. Additionally, CB[6] was detected as low as 0.1% to 99.9% ratio of CB[6] to CB[7]. This research is important because host-guest inclusion complexes can be used in real-life applications such as drug delivery and in the future more steps can be taken to deepen the understanding of cucurbit[n]urils complexes and their selectivity.en_US
