This study attempts to investigate the interrelationship of educational criteria and anecdotal reports at the primary and intermediate level. The criteria adopted for the purposes of this study are those which have been made operational by a team of University of Victoria scholars into a list of eight descriptors called the Characteristics of a Successful Learner. The Characteristics of a Successful Learner, which reflect The Educated Citizen document of the British Columbia Ministry of Education are: empathy, generativeness, industry, knowledge, risk taking, self esteem, strategicness, and thoughtfulness. The research involves two procedures which were conducted among three urban and three rural district schools: the researcher's independent analysis of anecdotal reports, and the collaborative involvement of the researcher with two volunteering primary and two volunteering intermediate teachers. During collaborative discussion and semi-structured interviews additional anecdotal report analysis was carried out. Findings were interpreted to determine the criteria and expectations employed by teachers, the reflection and congruency of criteria, the developmental continuity of criteria, and the nature and focus of teacher values. The findings of this study support the ongoing implementation of anecdotal reports at the primary and intermediate level. The findings of this study also support and encourage educators to continue to be aware of, and adopt, educational criteria which will enable students to become successful learners and educated citizens.en
