Abstract

Our lab recently reported the synthesis of new phosphonate polymers [−P(O)R−O−]n through thermal ring opening polymerization (TROP) of cyclic phosphonates (RPO2)3. These polymers have proven to be recyclable but are unstable to atmospheric moisture, hindering the ability of these materials to be used in a wider range of applications. However, stability was enhanced by polyphosphonates containing sterically bulky side group (-R). To further develop these polymers, we aim to enhance their stability to moisture using electronics combined with sterics in the side groups attached to the main chain of the polymer. Herein, we have synthesized cyclic phosphonates containing either electron-withdrawing or electron-donating sterically bulky side groups, which are potential precursors for stable and recyclable polymers.
