Abstract
Buddhism is widely regarded today as eco-friendly. Amidst the uncertainty and grief of climate change and cascading ecological crises, Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike are looking to Buddhist meditation and philosophy for alternative ways of relating to the
natural world. Historically, however, Buddhism has been rather ambivalent toward the natural world, promoting the ideas that freedom is to be found in transcending the world, and in loving the world. By surveying a range of Buddhist perspectives, I will suggest how both ideas might be true.
