Problems of propagation of plane waves, and telescopic and azimuthal shear waves in linear viscoelastic solids with one or more than one relaxation time are investigated. Quiescent initial conditions are assumed, and the wavefront propagates into an unstressed region. The propagation of discontinuities is analyzed. Solutions obtained by the method of characteristics with a finite difference scheme are presented graphically for various cases. Two approaches to the method of characteristics are used to solve these problems. The first approach uses the initial conditions so that the wavefront is obtained numerically, and the second approach incorporates a wave front expansion technique. The numerical solutions of the plane case by two approaches are compared, and the agreement is satisfactory.en
