dc.description.abstract | Gallathea by John Lyly is a Renaissance play about two cross-dressing girls who fall in love. Recently, the play has been receiving some much deserved attention, both critically and performance based. As such, an accessible, teachable edition becomes increasingly necessary. The Linked Early Modern Drama Online (LEMDO) project aims to facilitate the production of this edition. LEMDO inherited a modern text prepared by David Bevington. However, it lacked a semi-diplomatic transcription of the witness texts: a quarto from 1592 and a duodecimo from 1632. Using the Text Encoding Initiative’s XML markup language, I prepared a digital semi-diplomatic transcription of the 1592 and 1632 texts. The process of semi-diplomatic transcription allows for a close study of the texts and prepares Gallathea for the work done by future editors working with LEMDO to create a complete edition of Gallathea. | |
