Abstract

Background: Physical activity (PA) is essential for health, yet less than half of Canadian adults meet the national PA guidelines (<150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous PA per week). Just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs) delivered via mobile apps offer a promising strategy to promote PA by tailoring support based on individual needs. However, there is a limited number of PA JITAIs integrated with wearables. Objective: Develop a mobile JITAI to help adult smartwatch users increase PA levels. Methods: The JITAI PA intervention, Activerse, will be developed using the Pathverse platform. A literature review will identify best practices for JITAI design. The intervention targets adult smartwatch users who do not meet PA guidelines, as assessed via a validated questionnaire. Results: Activerse is a four-week program designed to promote PA. If the Apple Watch detects <25 minutes of MVPA the previous day, JITAI modules will be triggered. Notifications will be sent three times daily, allowing participants to engage at their convenience. Participants can choose from five PA options based on motivation and energy levels. Conclusion: PA JITAIs may be a scalable solution for inactivity. This study sets the stage for feasibility and pilot testing.
