dc.description.abstract | High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a prevalent illness that can lead to heart disease and strokes, among other health issues. Patients who suffer from hypertension can record and monitor their blood pressure using mobile applications (apps). However, these apps currently have flaws which can negatively impact their usability and ultimately their adoption. For this project, the researcher conducted heuristic evaluations of three mobile apps for blood pressure monitoring. Heuristic evaluation is a technique for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of an application's user interface by comparing it to a set of design guidelines. Next, the researcher used these findings to create a high-fidelity prototype that built on the strengths of existing apps but provided an improved user experience by overcoming their weaknesses. For example, the prototype included embedded educational information that was absent from the evaluated applications. Since hypertension is most prevalent in older people, who may have a limited digital literacy, it is imperative that these apps use simplistic designs, better tutorials, and features that improve ease of use like larger buttons and font size. | en_US |
