I have critically evaluated the voluntary carbon market (VCM) and its effectiveness in mitigating climate change. Carbon offsetting has become common practice among organizations trying to improve their personal image. Through my research, I found that the lack of regulation, unreliable data analytics, and susceptibility to greenwashing have undermined the credibility of the industry. Companies abusing carbon credits as a low-cost alternative have hindered improvements towards making internal processes more sustainable. Me and my co-researcher have attempted to answer all the unknowns surrounding the industry and provide some insight into how to properly navigate it.
