About the Journal
Autism's Own was an international, open-access, peer-reviewed journal that exclusively published content written by individuals with autism on the subject of autism. The journal aimed to promote autism culture through creative expression and released its annual issue on April 2nd, World Autism Awareness Day.
Journal History
Founded in 2012 by Joseph Z. Sheppard, an autistic author and University of Victoria (UVic) student, the journal originated as a collection of works by members of "Authors with Autism," a UVic peer-support group for autistic students and lifelong learners. With the co-founding support of Dr. James Tanaka, who envisioned its evolution into a peer-reviewed academic journal, and later under the guidance of Associate Vice President Academic Planning Dr. Catherine Mateer, this vision was realized.
Focus & Scope
The journal's foundational principle was to establish a peer-reviewed academic platform where all content pertaining to autism would be developed exclusively by individuals with an autism diagnosis. This design was implemented to incorporate subjective, first-person narratives of autism, ultimately contributing to the promotion of international autism culture.
