| dc.description.abstract | This study focuses on relationships between Big and Little Brothers and Sisters, within the Big Brothers and Sisters program. The essence of these relationships is discovered through phenomenological inquiry. Drawing from the literature in child and youth care, education, mentoring and on the Big Brothers and Sisters program, a framework was designed to guide this inquiry. Through in-person, individual interviews with Big and Little Brothers and Sisters, this study explored the formation and meaning of relationships developed between children and non-family adults. The five universal themes discussed are: Turning a Match into Our Friendship, Actively Being and Becoming, Mutual Ownership, Acceptance and Relatedness, and Personal Benefit. Illuminating the essence of relationships between children and non-family adults, the findings of this study point out the personal and dynamic factors which make these relationships meaningful. The final chapter explains the significance and implications of this study and suggests avenues for further research in this area. | |
