With the help of a case study of a trade union initiative of informal workers in Kolkata, India, I argue that if informal workers in developing countries have to ameliorate their working conditions and living standards, they cannot adhere to the traditional organizing principles of a trade union. They need to form a larger aggregation of workers integrating many other institutions in order to enhance their bargaining power.en_US
