| dc.description.abstract | In the AEC/FM industry, partners must frequently exchange information to accomplish a wide range of collaborative tasks. While this exchange of information is typically manual or human-to-human communication, there is an ongoing trend towards automated or semi-automated communications, where the communication is directly from computer-to-computer. In order to accomplish this computer-based communication, message-based communications (referred to as transactions) must be more formally described and designed. This research looks at the way that message-based communications between project partners are defined and carried out, with a goal of formalizing these messages to support computer-based transactions. The work proposes an ontology-based approach to formalizing messages in the domain of infrastructure management. The research has also carried out an industry survey to identify current practices for information exchange in the domain of infrastructure management, and to determine opportunities for improvement. Based on the results of this survey, the ontology-based approach will be used to develop a procedure for improving computer-based information exchange practices. | en_US |
