The architecture, engineering, construction, and facility management (AEC/FM) industry in Canada has been facing an unprecedented level of competition. To stay competitive in today’s marketplace, the Canadian AEC/FM industry must develop and deploy IT solutions for planning, designing, constructing, and managing facilities, and to perform these tasks in the most effective and productive way. Identifying the role that information technologies can play and developing solutions that implement these technologies is a major challenge the industry is facing in order to achieve this goal. This paper presents an overview of an ongoing research effort, called “Information Technologies for AEC/FM in Canada” (ITAC), that aims to leverage the current use of IT in the AEC/FM industry through the development of a computational infrastructure and a component-based framework to enable the integration of AEC/FM projects information.en_US
