This paper presents an ongoing research project that aims to define transaction and implementation standards for data exchanges within the Architectural, Engineering, Construction, and Facility Management (AEC/FM) industry. Given the fragmented nature of the AEC/FM domain, information sharing and management have been major problem areas for decades. Information exchange can generally be described invterms of individual information transactions. Several efforts are underway to standardize the content of data exchange transactions without attempting to standardize the transactions themselves. Standardization of the transactions will potentially provide better communication, increased quality and productivity, and reduced costs, delays and legal suits in the industry.en_US
