Abstract

The Shape of the Space Between Us is the accumulation of experiential and heart-directed research, materially manifested through paintings and installation. The work investigates dynamics of relationality between artist, viewer, and material. Conditions of static materiality, painting as an individualist process, and institutional art viewing are considered, interfered, and subverted. These efforts are made with the intention of cultivating an art practice that takes form more closely to a multi-faceted relationship than an individual’s deed. These topics have been explored through a focus on the lively quality of oil paint, inviting collaborative efforts into the painting process, and installing work in a manner where the physical involvement of the audience is integral to the piece itself. Theories and ideas from the writings of Bell Hooks, Nicolas Bourriaud, Dean Spade, and Jan Zwicky have been significant guides to the work and thought around it.
