What's In a Name? The Impacts of BIPOC Names on Self-Perception, and Experiences in the Workforce and Academia

| dc.description.abstract | Many of us underestimate the importance that our names hold in the way we navigate the world. Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC), however, often notice the various impacts that our names have on our experiences, whether that be in social settings, in academia, or in the workforce. While our Experiences may vary depending on whether our names are Western-like or culturally traditional, many of us experience the same sorts of feelings at one time or another. This research explores these experiences and feelings of BIPOC participants through a series of semi-structured interviews that I have conducted. The experiences of these participants are woven into my own experiences as the final stage of my research will be the writing of a “reportage littéraire” - a genre better known in English as literary journalism or creative nonfiction. The goal of this research is to learn about how names impact the already complex question of identity and personal experiences, particularly for BIPOC people. | en_US |
