Abstract
The interactions between demography and epidemics are investigated for the transmission of diseases in populations which have an arbitrary number of distinct epidemiological groups. The existence and stability of a disease free equilibrium is obtained and various threshold criteria which determine the course of the spread of the disease are derived. Implications of the interactions of the demographic and disease transmission processes are discussed, and epidemiological interpretations are given for the different threshold criteria which govern the spread of the disease.
